Comic Strip: Shakespear’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

In the grade 9 English class, we have been reading Shakespear’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and breaking down the language and meaning as we go. As an assignment, Andrea asked us to summarize a scene from the play and create a six-panel comic strip of that scene.

The goal of this assignment was for the student to be able to show their understanding of the play by shortening the scene down to six small panels. We were forced to think creatively and use different ways to convey meaning and summarize the plot of that scene, i.e. background pictures, headings and text instead of just the original dialog. Summarizing is a good skill to have because it makes us really think about the story and its key points. If we just wrote the whole dialog into our comic strip, then we wouldn’t have to think about what was happening in the play and shrink it down to the important bits.
