Everyone agrees that kids do not come with a “how to” manual. As they reach middle school, their lives are increasingly complex and they are poised to take off in incredible directions. So how do our parenting habits affect the success of our kids’ education? Dr. Ted Spear, Head of School at IPS, hosted a thought-provoking talk about what matters in K-12 education and how parents can support their success with positive habits. Forty people attended the event, held at Doc Morgan’s Restaurant on Bowen Island in November. Spear discussed trends in education, how schools can create an environment that rises to meet the challenges of middle school education and beyond, and how we can both support our kids (and get out of their way!) as they cultivate their humanity. The evening wrapped up with a lively discussion about Ted’s tips for parents and great sharing by other parents and educators about what works for them.
