After much discussion, the staff at IPS decided over the summer to allow students to have access to their digital devices (e.g. phones, ipods, kindles, etc.) over breaks and recess. One of our students, however, noted a potential downside: many students are no longer communicating with one another. “Everyone is just stuck into their phones; they are not interesting anymore.”
In order to get the students to think about this, we recently showed them this video entitled, I Forgot My Phone. We then asked the students to think about how their use of digital devices might actually be cutting them off from one another, and invited them to consider how they might want to change their behaviour over their breaks, and beyond. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
