The French language program at IPS centers on a highly effective approach to second language acquisition called the Accelerative Integrated Method (AIM). This methodology was developed by Wendy Maxwell and her husband Matt—two Bowen Island residents who have years of experience teaching French to students of all ages and of all ability levels.
AIM classes integrate kinesthetic, visual, and auditory elements into French language instruction in ways that appeal to different kinds of students who have different kinds of learning styles. Assigning specific gestures to French words helps students see, feel, and hear the language in ways not possible through approaches that are more traditionally thematic in nature. Students with little or no previous French language instruction can develop the skills required for them to become proficiently fluent in Canada’s ‘other’ official language.
